If we are serving with some of our heart, that is a good start! We can't be discouraged when we are commanded to serve with all of our heart, knowing that we don't measure up. Serving helps us to find ourselves as we lose ourselves in the service of others, which in turn helps us have more substance of soul, more of a heart to give and serve from.
